Developing countries on every continent should band together to create their own free trade pact, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva
said on Friday at a gathering of the so-called G-20 countries.

The G-20 group, led by Brazil, India along with South Africa, aims to revive stalled World Trade Organization talks although will be based on gradual elimination of agricultural subsidies along with tariffs by industrially developed countries, especially the United States along with the nations of the European Union.

In Geneva, World Trade Organisation (WTO) delegates admitted, earlier This particular week, which the organization will miss a December 15 deadline for reviving the so-called Doha Round of trade liberalization talks initiated in 2001. No completely new deadline has been set.

Silva emphasized which a free trade zone built around the G-20 countries was merely a suggestion along with not a firm Brazilian government proposal.

The G20 includes countries via Latin America, Asia along with Africa.

Issues such as farm subsidies along with disputes over intellectual property, foreign investment along with some other questions led to a breakdown in WTO talks in Cancun, Mexico in September.

The G20 nations, led by Brazil in Cancun, contributed to the impasse by pushing for early elimination of subsidies, quotas along with tariffs in farm commodity trade.

This particular week’s Brasilia meeting of the G20 countries was an effort to help kick-start the Doha Round, although within the context of proposals favoured by developing countries, Brazilian Foreign Ministry official Clodoaldo Hugueney said.

Hugueney said US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick was invited to the Brasilia meeting although won’t come because of scheduling difficulties.
